Foundation Research Fellowship: Early Complementary Feeding of Eggs in Rural Guatemala

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation is funding a research fellow to participate in a research project titled, “Early Complementary Feeding of Eggs in Rural Guatemala.” This opportunity will fund a licensed member of the Academy to participate full-time in a one-year project on the ground in Guatemala in collaboration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Maya Health Alliance/Wuqu’ Kawoq.

This fellowship will provide a rich research experience. Fellow responsibilities include:

  • Serve as study coordinator for the study, which will examine the impact of the daily provision of eggs on child development which will include all aspects of recruitment, enrollment, retention, and fidelity monitoring
  • Serve as liaison for community and engagement efforts
  • Assist with data management (cleaning and analysis) and dissemination for the project

The fellowship begins on or around January 6, 2020. Guatemala International Experience - Kansas State University's Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health

The Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health (FNDH) department is excited to offer an extraordinary education abroad program for students and professionals who desire to have a life transforming experience! The focus is on service-learning to help the indigenous Maya people improve their quality of life. Students spend 6 weeks performing service-learning with a partner organization. There is an on-site K-State program manager to assist students while living, learning, and serving in Guatemala. This program runs year round and is open to all students across the US as well as professionals and the community in general. Professionals and other non-students choose their length of stay. We encourage you to become an active and engaged part of a global community where you will grow both personally and professionally! You will make a positive impact in the lives of the indigenous Maya people.

Iowa State University Dietetic Internship Program

The mission of the ISU DI is to enhance human health and quality of life by preparing competent entry-level Registered Dietitian Nutritionists for current and emerging roles in diverse settings.

Interns spend one month in rural Ghana, partnering with dietetic interns from the University of Ghana to practice the Nutrition Care Process, focusing on complementary feeding practices of breastfed infants. Interns complete a research project and present their findings to the community and at the University of Ghana.

Course Goals for the one month international rotation in Asesewa, Ghana, West Africa:

  • Contribute to the quality of the dietetic profession through exposure to rural communities in underserved areas
  • Contribute to improving the nutritional status of the communities in underserved areas
  • Improve the diet diversity and reduce incidence of malnutrition by providing nutrition education to mothers and families

Course Learning Objectives

  • Interns will enhance their professional skills through application of the Nutrition Care Process in a rural, underserved, international community.
  • Interns will understand how to use Nutrition Care Process focused on child and maternal health.
  • Interns will promote cultural understanding through shared cultural experiences with local dietetic interns/students.
  • Interns will understand and demonstrate the ability to support existing health care and community systems in providing nutrition through nutrition-related activities.
